Since the German invasion a week ago, you've been fighting holding actions and organized retreats. You just haven't have enough infantry, armor, artillery, or air support to stop the German aggression. However, you've heard on the radio that the British and French have promised aid.
Now the Germans threaten Krakow and have surrounded a large pocket of Polish units to the west of Krakow near Kutno. General Kutrzeba has organized a counter-attack, where we intend to break out to the east and join the defense of Krakow. You are to oversee the breakout in this sector.
Assembled for your mission are two infantry battalions (though each platoon is only at 2/3 strength), two cavalry companies, and an armored company. You'll have to divide these forces between you and your subordinates, and give each subcommander a clear mission.
Your heavy weapons (AT guns, HMGs) need transport but unfortunately you have only enough pack horses to move two at a time. Perhaps the rest can be used to prevent German flanking movements. The Polish Air Force is gone, and all our heavy artillery (what little is left) is tied up in another sector.
Terrain makes the counter-attack interesting -- the river is low and fordable at all points, but wide, marshy regions surround the river and make vehicle travel impossible (infantry and horses can move through the marsh, albeit slowly). Of the two bridges in the area, one is destroyed, and the other is guarded by German forces and AT guns. You will have to engage the AT guns before your armor can make it across the river... your tanks are easy targets on the bridge.
Your armor is composed of machine-gun armed cavalry tankettes TK-3, machine-gun armed 7TPd (dual-turret), purchased French Renault R-35's (with good armor but poor firepower), and excellent 7TPj light tanks.
You've been trading shots with the Germans on the far side of the river with little effect at such extreme range. During the night you have the opportunity to deploy your units in your area of control however works best. Patrols are reporting more activity than normal in the German strongpoints. Beyond the ridge south of the river is an east-west road the Germans have been using heavily to move units east.
The counterattack begins at dawn (or shortly before if preferred). You are to break out across the Bzura and then move west toward Krakow. It is necessary to clear and hold the path over the bridge so that further units can use that path.
Your troops are inexperienced and under-trained, but their morale is currently good (average overall). They're happy to be taking the offensive.
Victory Condition: Break out all possible forces to the east, on the south bank of the Bzura along the road, while holding the bridge chokepoint path open for further forces and reinforcements.
