German Infantry Battalion Commander -- Major ___________
Situation Report: Evening 8 Sep 1939, east of Warsaw

A large group of Polish forces have been surrounded in the area north of the Bzura river and west of Warsaw. Your battalion has just arrived on the scene this evening.

You are to relieve a sector of the encircling forces that are containing the Polish. Your mission is merely to contain -- not to close the encirclement or push forward. This should be relatively easy due to the disorganization and demoralization of the Polish forces (who have done little to stop Fall Weiss in the last week).

Terrain aides your cause: the river is low and wide marshy areas will be difficult or impossible to cross. One of the bridges across has been destroyed. The other you are to hold open at all costs -- it is through this route that we plan to reduce the encirclement in a few days. Without this bridge, our upcoming victory will be greatly delayed. The Polish have some units set up across the river, and the previous commander informs you they've been trading shots back and forth now and then with little effect.

To the south of you on the east-west road will be passing a large number of German forces pressing onward to Warsaw.

Your battalion is not up to full paper strength (and has never been) -- each company has only two platoons rather than three. You have a fair complement of 37mm AT guns, HMGs, and AT rifles, and 50mm mortars. Regimental artillery has not yet arrived in the area, but you have two medium mortar batteries that will have time to range in three pre-designated firing spots. Your headquarters includes a Luftwaffe liaison officer and regimental artillery officer.

Your troops are inexperienced but well-trained and of high morale.

Victory Condition: Hold the Polish north and west of the Bzura, in their current containment area, until given orders to start reducing the encirclement.
